Ayurvedic Skin Care: Natural Tips for Glowing, Healthy Skin
By Dr. Dipti Deshpande, BAMS | Ayurvedic Skin Specialist | Swaanubhutii, Pune
Every day in my clinic at Swaanubhutii, I see patients who have tried every product on the market — serums, chemical peels, topical steroids — only to find that their skin issues keep returning. As an Ayurvedic physician with over ten years of practice in skin disorders, I can tell you with confidence: lasting skin health is an inside job. Ayurveda doesn’t just treat what you see on the surface; it addresses the root cause.
The Ayurvedic Understanding of Skin Health
In Ayurveda, healthy skin (Twak) is a reflection of balanced Agni (digestive fire), clean blood (Rakta Dhatu), and harmonious doshas. When the gut is compromised, undigested food creates Ama (toxins) that circulate in the blood and manifest on the skin as acne, pigmentation, eczema, or premature ageing. This is why my approach to skin care always begins with a full Ayurvedic consultation — not a product recommendation.
Identify Your Skin's Dosha — The First Step in Ayurvedic Skin Care
In Ayurveda, healthy skin (Twak) is a reflection of balanced Agni (digestive fire), clean blood (Rakta Dhatu), and harmonious doshas. When the gut is compromised, undigested food creates Ama (toxins) that circulate in the blood and manifest on the skin as acne, pigmentation, eczema, or premature ageing. This is why my approach to skin care always begins with a full Ayurvedic consultation — not a product recommendation.
Before any treatment, I assess a patient’s dominant skin dosha:
- Vata Skin: Dry, thin, prone to fine lines, rough texture, and cracking. Aggravated by cold weather, stress, and erratic routines.
- Pitta Skin: Sensitive, warm, prone to redness, acne, rosacea, inflammation, and sun sensitivity. Aggravated by heat, spicy food, and anger.
- Kapha Skin: Oily, thick, prone to congestion, blackheads, cystic acne, and puffiness. Aggravated by heavy foods, lack of exercise, and cold, damp weather.
Knowing your skin dosha allows for genuinely personalised treatment — not the ‘dry/oily/combination’ oversimplification of conventional skin care.
5 Ayurvedic Skin Care Tips I Recommend to Every Patient
1. Nourish Your Gut to Clear Your Skin
The gut-skin axis is now well-established in modern dermatology — and Ayurveda has described this connection for millennia. I advise patients struggling with acne or dull skin to begin by correcting their digestion. Warm, freshly cooked meals, spices like turmeric, cumin, and coriander, and avoiding processed and cold foods make a visible difference in skin quality within weeks.
2. Daily Abhyanga (Oil Self-Massage) for Skin Health
Abhyanga — the daily practice of warm medicated oil massage before bathing — is one of Ayurveda’s most powerful anti-ageing recommendations. Oil massage improves peripheral circulation, nourishes deeper skin layers, strengthens the skin barrier, and removes surface impurities. I recommend sesame oil for Vata skin, coconut or sunflower for Pitta, and light mustard or sesame for Kapha.
3. Use Herbal Lepa (Ayurvedic Face Packs)
Herbal face packs, or Lepa, are a cornerstone of Ayurvedic cosmetology. Ingredients like Multani Mitti, sandalwood, turmeric, neem, Chandan (red sandalwood), and rose water have been clinically shown to have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and skin-brightening properties. At Swaanubhutii, our herbal facial treatments use customised Lepa formulations based on your dosha and skin concern.
4. Hydration — The Ayurvedic Way
Drinking eight glasses of cold water is not the Ayurvedic recommendation. I advise patients to sip warm water throughout the day, which gently cleanses the channels (Srotas) without aggravating Vata. Herbal teas with Triphala, fennel, or rose are also excellent for skin hydration and internal purification.
5. Prioritise Sleep — Your Skin's Repair Window
Ayurveda considers the hours between 10 pm and 2 am the peak Pitta time — when the body performs deep metabolic repair, including skin cell regeneration. Chronic late nights are one of the most consistent contributors to dull, inflamed, or ageing skin I see in my practice. Regular oil head massage (Shiroabhyanga) before sleep dramatically improves both sleep quality and skin health.
